What to Expect During Your Baby’s First InfantSEE® Exam

Your baby’s first year is filled with exciting milestones, from their first smile to their first steps. One milestone that many parents don’t think about - but is just as important - is their first eye exam. At Blue River Vision, we are proud to participate in the InfantSEE® program, which provides no-cost, comprehensive eye assessments for infants between 6 and 12 months of age.

Why InfantSEE® Exams Are Important

Vision plays a critical role in your baby’s development. Even before they can talk, their eyes are learning to focus, track movement, and work together. Detecting vision or eye health issues early can make a big difference in preventing long-term problems with learning and development. InfantSEE® exams are designed to identify potential concerns such as crossed eyes, significant refractive errors, or eye health conditions that could impact your child’s vision.

A Comfortable and Parent-Friendly Experience

The exam is simple, gentle, and designed to keep your baby as comfortable as possible. Unlike adult eye exams, your infant won’t need to answer questions or read letters. Our optometrists use specialized techniques to assess their vision and eye health in ways that are quick and baby-friendly. You can hold your baby during much of the exam, which helps them feel safe and secure.

What Happens During the Exam

  • Medical and Developmental History - We’ll ask questions about your baby’s birth, health, and family history to identify any potential risk factors.

  • Eye Health Evaluation - Using lights and lenses, we’ll carefully check for eye diseases, alignment issues, or signs of abnormal development.

  • Vision Assessment - Through age-appropriate methods, we’ll evaluate how your baby’s eyes focus and track objects.

  • Discussion and Guidance - After the exam, our team will explain the results and let you know if any follow-up care is needed. Most of the time, parents leave reassured that their child’s eyes are healthy and developing normally.
